Reading the World: Four International Writers from Ledig House

Ledig House International Writers Residency is one of the only residences of its type in the United States. Since its creation in 1992, Ledig House has hosted hundreds of writers and translators from roughly 50 countries around the world. The colony’s strong international emphasis reflects the spirit of cultural exchange that is part of Ledig’s enduring legacy.
At this event, Chad Post (Director of Open Letter at the University of Rochester) will lead a panel of writers and translators from around the world—all of whom are currently in residence at Ledig House. The panel will include readings and discussion from:

Hey, everybody! This is just your friendly neighbourhood MLC VP writing, so be sure to check out all the awesome content of this week’s newsletter! There’s a lot going on, and we’re always happy to have more people help us out: so be sure to drop by the Hartman Room in Lattimore, Wednesdays at 6:30pm!
Upcoming Dinner Plans
This past Saturday, MLC travelled to Park Ave to sample the wares of Esan Thai, which turned out a great success. The food was good, the company was fun, and it’s a shame for those who were unable to make it. BUT! There is good news on that front: we have another dinner scheduled for this upcoming month, on Friday, October 16. We will be going to Phillip’s European (http://www.phillipseuropean.com/) in a Dessert for Dinner fashion. (Who doesn’t like to binge every now and again?) We have plans to invite heads of department, professors, and of course all of you lovely people—feel free to extend invitations to your friends who might enjoy a night of cakes, pies, and desserts of all sorts in the European tradition! More information will be headed your way when we have it available.

On Campus:
The Chinese Students’ Association is having their Mid-Autumn Festival Show this Saturday, October 3rd. It’ll be a night of Chinese song and dance, and there will be prizes and games—sounds like a great time! It shall take place in Strong Auditorium from 7.30 – 9.00pm. Tickets are $5 for students, and are available at the Common Market, through the CSA, or at the door.
Off Campus:
The Dryden Theatre (which is easily accessible off the Red Line) is featuring films on the Fridays of the month of October from various countries. This Friday is a film from Uruguay, “The Pope’s Toilet”. Their website is http://dryden.eastmanhouse.org/, and from there you can find the schedules for the other films being shown. (There are also a number of classic vampire films being shown which look great!)
We know that sometimes it’s seen as a pain to get off campus, but we really recommend it. There is so much to do in Rochester, and it’s great to take advantage of it. At the University we have so much access to what’s out there; we have only to reach out for it. Doing stuff through MLC is a great start!
This Weeks’ Meeting
This week we discussed the Film Committee, Study Abroad, Open Letter, and opening MLC to others. There was an interest meeting for the Film Committee this past Tuesday. As it is still in the preliminary stages, not much was decided on, though we for sure want to get this ball rolling! There is a possibility of getting this all the way to the Little or the Dryden, so it’s very exciting. This has always been a success in the past, and we want to surpass any past experiences! Anybody interested in helping out with the Film Committee should contact Scott Forrester-Sims at sforres2@u.rochester.edu.
We are also currently looking into having guests from Study Abroad at an upcoming meeting, to share opportunities and experiences with these programs. Similarly, we are hoping to invite a speaker from Open Letter, the U of R's literary publishing house which specializes in international texts and through which the Certificate Program in Literary Translation is offered.

Chinese Conversation Hour
